The Passing of a Great Man
Very recently, an uncle had passed away. He was very close to me and my immediate family. He was uncle Paul. His house is right in our neighborhood. If anything, he was a strong man. He was everything from an engineer, businessman, real estate agent, mountain biker, swimmer, golfer, and a photographer. A man of many talents. He parted his hair much like the football coach Jimmy Johnson did. He was many things and more.
I have many fond memories of climbing that really large oak tree in his backyard or playing with the dog. Almost every Christmas, we would have dinner at their house. Uncle Paul and Aunt May would often cook something really elaborate like a turkey or a roast beef with all of the fixings.
The notion that he was a strong man seems almost ironic as far as his passing is concerned. What brought his passing was ultimately a degenerative disease that slowly debilitated him in his last few years. However, I when I remember him, I don't really think of him being emaciated and slowly losing his muscular control. See, I don't really think of the way he died. I think of the way he lived. Uncle Paul worked hard and yet he had almost a trademark smile and a certain easy-goingness about him. He lived life to the fullest and loved those who were near to him.
I'm going to miss him. Memories of him will always be there.
